GCMHP and WHO Discuss Ways to Support Mental Health Services in Gaza Strip

GCMHP welcomed a delegation from World Health Organization (WHO) comprising Dr. Khaled Nasser and Mr. Mohammed Abdel-Jawad, during a field visit to GCMHP’s Deir al-Balah Community Centre. The visit aimed to strengthen coordination and joint cooperation, as well as to explore ways to support and develop the mental health and psychosocial support services provided to beneficiaries.

The visit offered an opportunity to gain firsthand insight into the services provided by Deir al-Balah Community Centre and to discuss the needs and challenges associated with maintaining mental health services amidst the current humanitarian situation. Additionally, the parties discussed mechanisms to enhance cooperation in a manner that bolsters GCMHP’s capacity and addresses the growing demand for mental health services.

Particular attention was paid to the provision of psychiatric medications and pharmacy management, given the vital importance of ensuring the continuous availability of essential medicines for mental health service beneficiaries and guaranteeing their safe and regular access to them. Discussions covered medication-related needs, strategies to ensure their availability, and ways to improve coordination in this area to ensure the continuity of pharmacological treatment for patients without interruption.

The meeting underscored the importance of integrating psychiatric treatment, psychosocial support, and pharmacological therapy. These elements are considered fundamental to a comprehensive response to the needs of individuals requiring mental health services, especially given the exceptional circumstances currently facing Gaza Strip.
